FAQs about the voluntary recall

1. Why is Primal instituting a voluntary recall?
Primal Pet Foods is voluntarily recalling a single batch production code of Feline Turkey Raw Frozen Formula 3-pound bag. The FDA tested product in response to a single consumer complaint. Primal Pet Foods was alerted by the FDA that the testing of two bags of this lot resulted in a low thiamine level. In consideration of the FDA and our consistent desire to maintain the very highest product quality, we have decided to remove 3lb Turkey Feline Formula, Batch Code 060815 B22 from the market.

6. What caused the low test result?
AAFCO offers the following guidance on their website:

"Each batch of finished product is going to vary in composition due to variation in ingredient composition, mixing rates, and amount of water driven off during the cooking process. Unfortunately, a single analytical value does not give any indication as to the expected batch-to-batch variation. As a result, the composition of the batch that was tested may be very different from the one the feed control official analyzes!"
The natural products we use can vary in their nutrient profile from season to season. This led us to further validate our recipes via feed trial. Further complicating this issue is the variable testing processes implemented by different labs; our lab has a very sophisticated and sensitive process to measure Thiamine levels. A lab utilizing less precise processes could yield a very different result and in this case we believe the result obtained by the FDA testing facility may be in question.

8. How will I know if my pet has a Thiamine deficiency?
Cats fed only diets low in thiamine for several weeks may be at risk for developing a thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is essential for cats. Symptoms of deficiency displayed by an affected cat can be gastrointestinal or neurological in nature. Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include decreased appetite, salivation, vomiting, and weight loss. In advanced cases, neurologic signs can develop, which may include ventriflexion (bending towards the floor) of the neck, wobbly walking, circling, falling, and seizures. If your cat has consumed the recalled lot and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.
